The University of Sydney is Australia's first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7300 permanent staff, supporting over 50,000 students.
The Department of Environmental Sciences seeks to understand the integrated behaviour of the soil-plant-atmosphere system as it affects the flow and partitioning of resources including carbon and water. This is a highly interdisciplinary team interested in how the complex interactions between the different components of the system impact on food security and associated ecosystem services in the immediate and long-term.
Reporting to Dr ####, you will carry out important research into water storage in trees and soil, the aim of which is to understand how this impacts tree water use and catchment hydrology and to develop advanced process-based tree and catchment level models incorporating this understanding. You will ensure continual maintenance and operation of field installations in the Cotter Catchment near Canberra with the responsibility of publishing high-quality research outputs in peer-reviewed journals. The position requires extensive field and laboratory work and modelling work including measuring soil moisture content and environmental variables, measuring tree water use by sap flow methods and building sap flow probes.
The successful candidate will possess:
demonstrated experience in measuring water transport in soils and trees
experience modelling soil water transport and tree water loss using process-based models
experience with sap flow methodology
a track record of completing high-quality research to publication stage
excellent communication skills
A completed PhD at the time of appointment is essential. Experience with isotopic techniques and basic computer programming in C, C++, VBA and/or R will be favourably considered.
